Feist had an idea to shoot a short film about a couple breaking up after their vacation, and stumbling across the production of the My Moon My Man music video. Kevin Drew, Dani Kind and I worked on series of improvisations in the quite off hours of Toronto's Pearson International Airport. A sweet and quirky little piece we will be releasing soon.

BASIA BULAT

We shot the video on Mount Royal on what was the last warmish day in Montreal. The one take wonder was steadicamed by Geoff St. Hillaire. Bears, skeletons, donkeys, foxes. and Venetian masqueraders wandered out of the shadows to join in. Dan Seligman aka Man Of The People played the Wood Chopping Fox. The Axe makes a cameo at the end of the vid.

Anthony Seck's "Mercy Seed" is a cinematic examination of the human condition active in worldly conflicts; a film that brilliantly portrays the act of an external influence as the solution to a seemingly tragic ending.

Floyd is a modest farmer who makes an honest living raising pigs. He takes pride in his work and doesn't react well when a transport driver for Road King carelessly falls asleep at the wheel. He becomes even more upset when Tuffy, the owner of Road King, reacts threateningly to Floyd's complaint. Floyd sets out for a vengeful apology, armed with the pains of the past and accompanied by a young woman running from her present.

Seck's protagonist is a refreshing twist on the vengeful. Floyd's a well-developed, complex character whose calm disposition in the face of anger and disappointment is alarming. His disdainful emotions are channeled through wood chopping so intense, he's destroying the present and the past.

Seck's ability to convey emotion through the lens is a continuous thread through the film. The Ontario landscape as Floyd and his companion travel to Tennessee transitioning into northern American farmland is beautiful and pleasant, juxtaposing the current mood of the film. The serene landscape paired with ill emotion is much like Floyd: a stoic outward appearance with a much deeper makeup. Even more impressing is how Seck chooses to reveal Floyd's more complex insides. This moment is powerful, driven by flashbacks and the flashing lights of an ambulance, creating a sense of urgency and anxiety.

"Mercy Seed" isn't just about a man traveling on the road to revenge. It's a film about the intangible world's interaction with humanity and the flow of the universe; a thought provoking, spiritual jolt reflecting life's rarities and wonders.

The new album is FINISHED! Some amazing people have contributed and made this a great experience. Julian Brown (Apostle Of Hustle), Will Glass (Octagon), Sophie Trudeau (A Silver Mt. Zion) make up the core of the band. Guests include; Amy Millan, Evan Cranley, Basia Bulat. Elizabeth Anka Vajajic, Theirry Amar, Efrim Menuck, Jessica Moss, Becky Foon, Gordon Allen, Phillip Lauzier, Jason Sharp, BRian Lypson, Rick Trembles & Chris Burns, John Wilson (producing 2 tracks) and Sam Shalabi scoring strings and horns. A special version of Tom Noonan's Devil's Lake is also a treat. Who knows when or where I'll find a home for it, but for now it's keeping me company in these trailing cool pre-spring days. Thanks all!

UPCOMING RELEASE
This release has been postponed. Stay tuned.

Park Piece is a 20 minute improvisation piece recorded and mixed at the Hotel 2 Tango by Theirry Amar. Sam Shalabi and I invited John Heward to join us on the recording of a piece we originally played as a duo at the Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival in the summer of 2007.

Capt. John E.R. Seck, first on the left, my father, taken aboard a whaling station in Antarctica. The very same vessel on which the story for 'Whaling Tale' took place. My father narrates the story on the Valley album.

The music for 'Whaling Tale' has just been selected for a new film by Douglas Coupland.

Dawson City to Whitehorse, in the Yukon. A First Nations friend driving me from Dawson to Whitehorse told me the story of a white ash which lays about 3 ft under the surface of the entire Yukon Territories. He told me that long ago, a volcano erupted spewing the thick white ash into the air. A sulphuric winter. The ash blanketed the landscape for months and drove the First Nations people south into the Americas. Paiute, Navaho, Modoc, and the Wappo, all driven south by the volcanic explosion. America, populated by an explosion that just keeps on exploding.

Here are some eye grabs from the road. Cadaques, Spain (Dali's summer home), La Mancha, Spain on the set with Amy Millan and Evan (Elvis) Cranley for the Baby I video, your everyday church in Fribourg, Switzerland, on the highway between Vegas and LA, Universal Studios at night...and Sir. Thomas Green with Rex Murphy the curious parrot.
